This is a superb example of the historic buildings that there are in Ipswich.  It has had many uses of the years, most recently as a bookshop and now a kitchenware shop.  It contains evidence of six earlier structures, three of which date back to the 15th Century.  The house was owned by the Sparrowe family for much of its existence.  There was a story that Charles II was hidden here after his defeat in the Battle of Worcester in 1651.  The Royal connection is still evident with the 1670s coat of arms included on the decorative plasterwork (or pargeting) on the outside of the building.  It is also worth noting that the four panels represent the continents of Africa, Asia, Europe and America.  Australasia is conspicuous by its absence as was it was yet to be discovered by Europeans.","0:0");
Gallery.addEntry ("00002","Orwell Bridge","images/ourtown/icon_bridge.jpg","images/ourtown/main_bridge.jpg","The Orwell bridge isn't technically in Ipswich, it is however one of the most impressive landmarks of the local area. The Orwell Bridge is a major structure, and the largest of its type in the UK. It was built about 20 years ago, at a cost of £24m, to carry the A14 trunk road over the River Orwell estuary. It is nearly 1.3km long, 24m wide and, at its highest point, 45m above the river.  This is big enough for the ships destined for The Port of Ipswich to pass under. The sheer amount of traffic that passes over the bridge means that road works are of frequent annoyance to motorists whilst structural checks and surface repairs are made.","0:0");

Gallery.addEntry ("00004","The Cornhill","images/ourtown/icon_cornhill.jpg","images/ourtown/main_cornhill.jpg","The Cornhill has been at the centre of the town's life since Saxon times, witnessing markets, public meetings, civic ceremonies and fairs.  The Cornhill has also witnessed some disturbing events.  The stocks and pillory stood here, where miscreant townsfolk were publicly humiliated. Nine people were burnt at the stake between 1538 and 1558.  The Cornhill is also the location of two of the most significant buildings in the town.  The Town Hall built in 1868 from yellowish Bath stone, red sandstone from Mansfield and Portland limestone.  Figures (all female) that represent Commerce, Justice, Law & Learning are depicted on the Town Hall.  The Post Office, now converted to a bank, also has female figures representing the great Victorian achievements of Industry, Electricity, Steam and Commerce.  Two more female figures presiding over the Cornhill represent Genius and Science either side of the royal arms.  Opposite the Town Hall is an archway which was created in 1931 by cutting though existing buildings to give access to what is now Lloyds Avenue.  Under the arch is the Three Angels - a technology based sculture donated to the town by British Telecom, it displays information about Ipswich on its three screens.","0:0");
Gallery.addEntry ("00006","Portman Road","images/ourtown/icon_itfc.jpg","images/ourtown/main_itfc.jpg","The home of Ipswich Town Football club, Portman Road is ideally placed only a few hundred yards from the railway station.  The football club first moved to Portman Road in 1883. The club have now proceeded with plans to increase the capacity of the South  Stand. This will involve the addition of another 4,000 seats to the ground's capacity and the stand will also house a restaurant that will overlook the pitch. Building work has now commenced and the stand should be fully completed during 2001. The development will cost in the region of £5m.  This will bring the total capacity of the Portman Road ground to 26,500.","0:0");
Gallery.addEntry ("00007","Christchurch Mansion","images/ourtown/icon_mansion.jpg","images/ourtown/main_mansion.jpg","Set in extensive parkland, Christchurch Mansion was built in the 16th century and has some 40 rooms furnished in various periods, from the fine Tudor bedroom to the sumptuous 18th century state rooms. It houses an exhibition of Lowestoft china, while costumed figures lend vitality to the re-created servants' wing of the house, with its large array of cooking and domestic utensils. The Wolsey Gallery, named after the Cardinal born in the town, displays Gainsborough and Constable treasures.  The mansion also includes some modern art, that at first glance can appear to be very strange, a six foot box of tissues!","0:0");

Gallery.addEntry ("00005","Ipswich Docks","images/ourtown/icon_dock.jpg","images/ourtown/main_dock.jpg","This area of the town has taken on the name of docklands, but as far as Ipswich people are concerned all parts of the wet dock area are known simply as 'The docks.' Built in 1841, it was the largest enclosed water space in England and the largest single dock in the world. Once a thriving commercial port with grain and agricultural products moving in and out through the lock gates, these days the wet dock is more recreational, with restaurants and a growing marina, there is also an increasing number of pubs nearby. This wet dock area also provides berthing for naval or historic interest vessels visiting Ipswich. The commercial traffic has moved out beyond the lock gates and on to the banks of the River Orwell, to what now is a container port known as the West Bank and opposite another facility, Cliff quay. The commercial development is reaching down river from Ipswich Town centre to the Orwell bridge.","0:0");
